Lance Cochrane - Drought Conditions
Tuesday Jan 03, 2023
Tuesday Jan 03, 2023
Join Nelseena with special guest Lance Cochran as they discuss improvements in the quality of the herd.Welcome to the Cattlemen's Corner. I'm Brian Hale, sitting in for the late Howard Hale,as we continue his legacy of speaking with cattlemen and women from around the globe.Cattlemen and cattlewomen like to have peace of mind knowing their calves will be bornunassisted and alive. Getting more calves live on the ground is the first step to gettingmore pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed and also equates to more potential for futureprofit. The Gellvian Balancer breed has lowered birth weights and increased calving ease tomeet demands of today's beef industry. Visit gelbvieh.org. Here's Nelseena with Lance Cochran.I think that in the 10 years and I've been familiar with Blackwell and the Sylvarn isthe quality of cattle just keeps improving. It has. The drought in 2011-2012 we saw ahuge liquidation of herds in this area and when people, the producers who decided togo back and get back in the business or to ramp up their herds to increase their herdsize, they didn't just go and increase their herd size with any old bull or any old cow. They did it right. They went and found really good genetics. A lot of northern geneticshave come south in the last 20-30 years. They were able to get a hold of some of that andthey increased their genetics, the profitability of the cattle, the efficiency and I think that'sso important now watching every penny that is spent, watching the return on your dollar, the return on your investment as those people in New York City to ROI's, the return on yourinvestment. They ranchers now see the importance of that simply because of the cost of feed, cost of diesel fuel for crying out loud, cost of diesel, the cost of everything. That was Lance Cochran with our host, Nelseena Lehmann. That's going to do it for today's program and remember there's more content on the web including longer interviews at cattlemanscorner.com.Thanks again for listening and may God bless. I'm Brian Hale.

I'll be back with the day's guest right after this. Registration is now open for the no till on the Planes Winter Conference January 23 through the 25 in Wichita, Kansas. More information and registration online at no till.org advanced Concepts in Soil Health Fundamentals Conference workshops themes lowering inputs, increasing profitability with biology and Planning bringing the next generation into production. No till on the planes winter Conference 23rd through the 25 January Wichita, Kansas Dick Gearing and his family have Black Kettle buffalo at Mound Ridge, Kansas. He doesn't like to work above the buffalo when they're working him. Give us a little more information about how you work those buffalo, will you? And keep them quiet. Dick. Get down on the ground. Watch their body language. Use pressure to move in and move out. Release a little pressure. If they're doing what you want, let them go. If they're not doing you want, apply a little more. The key to working these animals is to not get them mad. Learn how not to get them mad and things go real smooth loading old bulls, they can be pretty cantankerous and pretty set in their ways. Loading old bulls at home typically takes 1015 minutes. If you insist on doing it away that they don't want to do it, it may take you ten or 15 hours. Use your head and be smart about it and things go really well. Well, basically what you're talking about the way you ought to be handled. Cattle exactly. It's the same thing. People ask, what's the similarity? And I say, well reason buffalo is exactly like cattle. And you just have to learn those subtle differences and take advantage of them. Dick carrying Black Kettle buffalo at Mound Ridge, Kansas. Thanks for joining us. Great to have you. Long. May God bless. And you come back and join us again, won't you? I'm Howard Hale.
